Shake It Off – recorded in  2014 by Taylor Swift – is the second full length song created for the Song Wizard.

The Boomwhacker melody of this song is entirely in the F Major Pentatonic Scale. Pentatonic scales only use 5 pitches.
The name comes from the Greek word for five (penta) and the Latin word for tone or sound (tonus) – Hence 5 sounds.

Check out teaching tips in the drop down menu below for suggestions of how to play this song.

Teaching Tips

Shake it Off is presented at its original performance tempo of 150 BPM.
THIS IS VERY FAST! I would suggest slowing it down to at least 90 BPM when first starting out.

Gradually increase the speed.

There are many instances where the same note is played consecutively and it takes practice to play fast enough.

If students are struggling with repeating notes, simply get them to try playing the first and/or last notes in the sequence.

This song will not use all the tubes in a standard One-Octave set of Boomwhackers. The E and the B are omitted.

Like nearly all songs, some pitches are played significantly more often than others. This is particularly true of F because the key of this song is F major.

There is no perfect way to mix up the pitches to ensure that everyone gets an equal amount of notes to play.

Probably the easiest way to start is to divide the tubes up pairs as follows:

  • C & G
  • D & A
  • F & HiC

Try other combinations – maybe even without pairing specific intervals – to see what works best with the flow of the music and the student’s abilities.

During the ‘spoken’ section in the middle of the song, only the low C is playing. But you could get all the players to tap along and say the words for fun.

Leave your suggestions and comments in the field at the bottom of the page!

Song Lyrics
Verse 1
I stay out too late
Got nothing in my brain
That’s what people say, mm, mm
That’s what people say, mm, mm

I go on too many dates
But I can’t make ’em stay
At least that’s what people say, mm, mm
That’s what people say, mm, mm

Pre-Chorus
But I keep cruising
Can’t stop, won’t stop moving
It’s like I got this music in my mind
Saying it’s gonna be alright

Chorus
‘Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)

Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)

Verse 2
I never miss a beat
I’m lightning on my feet
And that’s what they don’t see, mm, mm
That’s what they don’t see, mm, mm

I’m dancing on my own (Dancing on my own)
I make the moves up as I go (Moves up as I go)
And that’s what they don’t know, mm, mm
That’s what they don’t know, mm, mm

Shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)

Spoken Interlude
Hey, hey, hey
Just think while you’ve been gettin’ down and out about the liars
And the dirty, dirty cheats of the world
You could’ve been gettin’ down
To this sick beat
(in rhythm)
My ex man brought his new girlfriend
She’s like, “Oh my God!”
I’m just gonna shake
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won’t you come on over baby?
We can shake, shake, shake (Yeah)

Chorus

Yeah, oh
‘Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate (Haters gonna hate)
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)

Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake (And fake, and fake, and fake)
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)
Shake it off, I shake it off

I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off (Whoo-hoo-hoo)
Shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off (You got to)
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off

No Musical Experience? No Problem!

Can’t tell a quarter note from a treble clef? Are sharp and flat just words you would use to describe a knife? You’re not alone.

In fact, Whacky Wizards was created to be used by people just like you. The program was researched and designed specifically for teachers who had been asked to teach music but who often:

  • Could not read music
  • Had no prior knowledge of musical theory
  • Were not comfortable singing or playing an instrument

After a 10-week trial period with the program, every one of these teachers said that their confidence and competence for music instruction had improved.

The best part is that even if you don’t need musical knowledge to use the program, there are plenty of opportunities to learn. The site features an amazing 5-part tutorial series called “How Music Works” which teaches the most essential elements of music in a way that is approachable and pragmatic. These ‘go-at-your-own-pace’ video lessons offer instruction on how to learn and apply these concepts while using the program.
