The Lion Sleeps Tonight for Boomwhackers

The link below will open the Song Wizard in a separate tab suitable for full screen viewing

The Lion Sleeps Tonight is a well known tune originally from South Africa called “Mbube”.
You can learn more about it by clicking here.

This song features two parts simultaneously – A bass line (harmony) played with capped Boomwhackers
and a melody line with regular Boomwhackers. See the Teaching Tips section below for more information on how to introduce this concept to your class.

The song can be played with or without rolls. For detailed information on how to play with rolls check out this brief tutorial.

Teaching Tips

This song features a bass line to be played with capped boomwhackers. The pattern simply repeats itself over and over. Sometimes this kind of cyclical pattern is referred to as an Ostinato.

The Chord progression of this song simply repeats itself as well.
I (C Maj) – IV (F Maj) – I (C Maj) – V (G Maj) –

If the situation allows, have the children learn the bass line singing the word “Wimoweh” over and over.
See the many recorded examples to hear this being sung.

This song requires a judicious use of boomwhackers and caps, and good group management.

I recommend that everyone first learn the melody, then everyone learn the bass line. If you don’t have a full class set of caps, practice the bass part with everyone without caps so they can get the feel/rhythm.Then assign a few players who are particularly strong to play the bass line with the caps while the others play the melody.

You may still have to have to practice with just the bass line players, then just the melody players, then finally put both groups together.

The Bass Line players should be divided into three groups (all notes to be capped):

  • Group 1 — C & E
  • Group 2 — F & A
  • Group 3 — G & B

The melody is trickier to divide. If the group is relatively inexperienced, or if you are playing with rolls, use only one boomwhacker per player (You will need 5 players/groups). If not playing with rolls, you can pair up the boomwhackers as follows (but the player with E still only gets one)

  • C & D
  • E
  • F & G

If you have players who are really in for a challenge, one of the melody players can use three Boomwhackers, but has to pick up and put down instruments throughout the piece.

  • C, E & F
  • D & G

The person switching should hold the E in the left hand and switch between the F and C in their Right. This means sometimes the lower instrument is in the right hand. It takes a lot of practice but can be done.

This pairing can even be used with rolls, but then the player playing D and G has to alternate between instruments when rolling. Also an advanced technique.

No Musical Experience? No Problem!

Can’t tell a quarter note from a treble clef? Are sharp and flat just words you would use to describe a knife? You’re not alone.

In fact, Whacky Wizards was created to be used by people just like you. The program was researched and designed specifically for teachers who had been asked to teach music but who often:

  • Could not read music
  • Had no prior knowledge of musical theory
  • Were not comfortable singing or playing an instrument

After a 10-week trial period with the program, every one of these teachers said that their confidence and competence for music instruction had improved.

The best part is that even if you don’t need musical knowledge to use the program, there are plenty of opportunities to learn. The site features an amazing 5-part tutorial series called “How Music Works” which teaches the most essential elements of music in a way that is approachable and pragmatic. These ‘go-at-your-own-pace’ video lessons offer instruction on how to learn and apply these concepts while using the program.

What is Whacky Wizards?

Whacky Wizards is a program dedicated to help groups of all descriptions easily make music in a fun, interactive, and highly engaging way using Boomwhackers™ percussion tubes. The program has special features for educators, but can be used by any group wanting to have a great time making music.

The site revolves around three custom apps which focus on different aspects of music making – The Song Wizard, The Rhythm Tutor, and The Whacky Looper.

The content of the site is presented in modules which feature different songs (using The Song Wizard) or rhythmic patterns (Using The Rhythm Tutor and The Whacky Looper). Each module contains tips and instructions for playing it’s featured music with your group, as well as instructional resources for teachers and those wanting to expand their musical knowledge.
